This statement is an example of metaphor.

Metaphor is a figure of speech in which two unlike (means which literally does not have any connection with each other) are compared with each other by using no point of comparison.

Here, life and tree are two unlike things (which literally does not have any connection with each other)compared with each other.

Since, the point of comparison is not clear ,it is a metaphor.

If the point of comparison is clear then it will be similes.

For e.g- Ramesh behaves like a monkey.(here, like is the point of comparison but in the above given statement, there is no clear point of comparison)
