This statement in the story means that in life we have many choices but we have to chose at least which is good for us.But in the story, the narrator choses the road that is not grassy and comfortable to walk because others also go through that way as it is comfortable to walk in that but the poet chose the other road because he wanted to face all the problems, and then rise up to a good and better living life. Most people do not understand this. They just think of going through the grassy road of their life because they want comfortness. But still it will cause more pain at last. So the powt chose the second road.
