Particles can hypothetically go faster than light and still not violate the laws of physics. Such particles are called Tachyon, and they have the interesting property that they can't travel slower than the speed of light. As they lose energy, they speed up.
Personally, I suspect that Tachyons will prove to be impossible, that is, they will violate some of the laws of physics that we have not yet discovered. They don't violate any law we have today.
