Light travels at the speed of 3,00,000 km per second. Light from the sun reaches us in 8 minutes. If a supersonic jet were to travel from the sun at the speed of 1000 km per hour, approximately how long would it take to travel the same distance?

Given,

Speed of light = 3,00,000 km per second

Time taken by the light from the sun to reach us = 8 minutes

The speed of the supersonic jet to travel from the sun to us is = 1000 km per hour

To find,

Approximate time taken by the supersonic jet to reach us from the sun.

Solution,

We can simply solve this numerical problem by using the following process:

Mathematically,

speed (s) = distance traveled (d)/time of journey(t)

=> Distance traveled (d) = speed (s) × time of journey(t)

Now, according to the question;

Distance between the sun and us (d)

= speed of the light (s) × time taken to reach (t)

= 3,00,000 km/s × 8 minutes

= 3,00,000 km/s × 480 seconds

(Since 1 minute = 60 seconds)

= 144 × 10^6 kilometers

Now, according to the question;

speed of the supersonic jet (s)

= distance between the sun and us (d)/time taken to reach (t)

=> time taken to reach (t)

time taken to reach (t) = distance between the sun and us (d)/speed of the supersonic jet (s)

= 144 × 10^6 kilometers / 1000 km per hour

= 144 × 10^3 hours

Hence, the supersonic jet takes 144 × 10^3 hours to reach us, from the sun.
