Light travels from rarer medium 1 to a denser medium 2. The angle of incident and refraction are respectively 450 and 300. Calculate the (i) refractive index of second medium with respect to the first medium and (ii) refractive index of medium 1 with respect to the medium2.

Answer:

(i) square root 2 ; (ii)1/ square root 2

Explanation:Snells law  n1sini = n2sinr

(i ) n2/n1 =sin i/sinr = sin45/sin30  = (1/square root 2)/1/2 = square root 2

(ii) n1/n2 = sinr/sini = sin30/sin45 = 1/2/ (1/square root 2) = 1/ square root 2
