If you are taking out the refractive index of light in some medium with respect to vacuum, then it is called absolute refractive index.

Absolute refractive index= (speed of light in vacuum)÷(speed of light in given medium)
⇒(Speed of light in vacuum)÷(Speed of light in water)
⇒(3×10⁸) ÷(2.25×10⁸)
⇒3÷2.25(as 10⁸ and 10⁸ will get cancelled)
⇒1.33333.... or 4/3

Hope it helps :D

Refractive index of water is, 1.33.

What does refractive index mean?

  • Refractive Index (Index of Refraction) is a value calculated from the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to that in a second medium of greater density.
  • The refractive index variable is most commonly symbolized by the letter n or n' in descriptive text and mathematical equations.

What is unit of refractive index?

  • Refractive index of a medium is the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to the speed of light in the medium. Therefore, it has no units.

According to the question:

$$\begin{aligned}&n=\frac{c}{v} \\&n=\frac{3 \times 10^{8}}{2.25 \times 10^{8}} \\&n=1.33\end{aligned} Refractive Index of water is $1.33$

Hence, Refractive index of water is, 1.33.
