Lightning is seen before thunder because light travels much faster than sound (300,000 m/s) whereas, sound travels much slower (344 m/s) than light, so, thunder is heard later. This effect is exaggerated when the distance between the person the the lightning increases.

The speed of light is more than that of sound.

Due to more speed the light reaches us before the sound does.

So lightening is seen earlier and thunder is heard later.
