Lightning is plasma. Plasma is considered to be:

  • a highly ionized gas containing an approximately equal number  of positive ions and electrons.

Knowing that static electricity ionizes the medium in which it travels in order to travel, any static electricity (whether it is getting shocked when you poke a doorknob or a lightning bolt which you admire from the window) is, to some extent, plasma. This is because the medium is usually a gas. When this gas is ionized, it should be considered plasma.

So, lightning is neither gas, solid nor liquid. It should be considered plasma.
