Basically,
An element is a substance that cannot be split into simpler substances.
A compound is a substance that can be split into simpler substances by chemical means.
A mixture is a substance that can be split into two or more pure substances by physical means such as filtration, sublimation, distillation.
So you can say that an element cannot be split into simpler substances at all, a compound can be split into simpler substances by chemical means only and a mixture can be split into two or more pure substances by physical means.
Hope this helps!!
