LINA’s STORY

My name is Lina. I come from Indonesia. I came to Australia 2 years ago and now I am studying English. I like learning English. I go to school four days a week from 9am to 2:30pm. I learn speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.

To improve my speaking, I always speak English with my friends and teachers. I also speak English when I go to the shops.

To improve my listening, I always watch English TV at home, listen to other people talking, listen to my teacher and my friends in the classroom. I also listen to the English radio while driving to school.

To improve my reading, I read local newspapers, shopping catalogues, letters from Centrelink and the papers my teacher gives me.

To improve my writing I keep a diary and write about my weekend every week. Then my teacher checks my work and corrects my mistakes.

Sometimes I receive a letter from Centrelink and I don’t understand it. Because it’s too long and it is difficult to understand. I ask my friend to help me. She reads it and tells me what is in the letter. If I don’t understand something in the classroom, I ask my teacher or my friends and they help me.

I was a hairdresser in Indonesia. I like hairdressing but it is different in Australia. It costs a lot of money to study hairdressing in Australia. I would like to be an aged care worker in Australia. I will continue to study English. Then when my English is good enough, I will go to TAFE and study aged care. In five years’ time, I would like to save enough money to buy a house.
