Dear Editor,

“One inch tall”

Recently, I read a poem, “One inch tall” written by Shel Silverstein. The poem is creative and its title draws my attention. It describes what life would be like for a tiny man who is one inch tall and the challenges he faces. It is good not to get caught up in the difficulties in life. In this article, I will first describe the devices used to show the theme of the poem, and the reasons why I like the poem.

The poem is very cheerful and playful at the beginning, but the tone of the poem changes into rather serious at the end because of the change from unreal situation to real situation. Shel Silverstein describes the physical weakness of a tiny man. With strong determination, a difficult task can be completed. The narrator describes the life of a tiny man, but the at the end, he says he takes fourteen years to write down the poem. This shift reveals the true meaning of ‘one inch tall.’ The first-person narrator describes himself because he were one inch tall.

Silverstein makes use of the sound for a catchy rhythm. He conveys a song-like structure which is in happy mood, targeting at teenagers in the first and second stanzas. The rhyming structure of the poem is in a regular pattern. In the first stanza, “feast” rhymes with “least” and “beast”; in the second stanza, “bed ” rhymes with “thread” and “head”; and in the third stanza, “fright ” rhymes with “night” and “white” The poet occasionally alliterates to create an austere effect, as of “crumb of cake” in line three, to create hardships of being a small figure.

Shel Silvestein makes use of negation and metaphor to show the constraints of a tiny man. “You couldn’t hug your mama, you’d just have hug her thumb,’. “to move a pen would take all night.” “One inch tall” is a metaphor, showing inborn constraint. All of these limitations point that a tiny man will encounter task, which a normal sized man can complete easily. However, the poet delivers a message that even though the first-person narrator is one-inch tall, he can still live normally. With perseverance, the first-person narrator with physical constraints can overcome difficulties. With great effort, a person with one inch tall can take fourteen years to complete a poem.

The use of repetition shows the emphasis of the unreal world. “If you were one inch tall” is repeated in the end of the first and second stanza and it shows the importance of the imagination. It is not real. It is to emphasize that the limitation of physical constraint is not real, but the readers have to bear that supposition in mind. The use of conditional sentence to show the unreal situation.

The use of the second-person narrative in which the narrator refers to one of the characters as "you", therefore making the audience feels as if he or she were a character within the story.

I like the poem because the message conveyed is positive and optimistic. It conveys a message that readers with great determination can jump over the hurdles. By using the numbers, “seven days”, “a month”, “fourteen years” wants to show that it takes much time with tremendous efforts to complete a task successfully.

In short, “one inch tall” by Shel Silvestein is a lovely teenaged poem, expressing a positive attitude in life. All we should do is to put efforts. I believe the theme is the confession of the weakness and the acceptance of that a man has limitation. In short, this poem is interesting. I hope you enjoy reading the poem too.
