Lines of latitude or parallels of latitude are horizontal lines which run in an east-west direction parallel to the equator. The direct rays of the Sun fall on the equator making it the hottest zone (torrid zone) on the earth. The oblique rays of the Sun fall on the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn making it the temperate zone. The Frigid Zone around the poles are created because extreme slanting rays fall on the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle and the poles. This is why lines of latitude carve out the heat zones of the earth.
