Lines of longitude are lines which join all places having the same angular distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. All lines of longitude are semicircles of equal length. Lines of longitude are also called Meridians because of all places along lines of longitude experience mid-day at the same time. Longitudes are known as  meridians because in Geographical sense, meridians are great circles which are not parallel to each other but intersect each other at the North and  the South Poles. Same stands true of the longitudes. All longitudes are great circles which meet at the Poles.
