When Linnaeus first described his system, he named only two kingdoms – animals and plants. Today, scientists think there are at least five kingdoms – animals, plants, fungi, protists (very simple organisms) and monera (bacteria).

Linnaeus used the Two-kingdom classification.
- He put all the organisms into two groups, Kingdom Plantae and Kingdom Animalia.
- But eventually, this classification got replaced with the presently existing 'Five-kingdom classification'
- This was because Linnaeus's classification had many drawbacks.
- There were many organisms that belonged to neither plant nor animal kingdom.
- Linnaeus's classification did not tell anything regarding the nucleus, cell structure, mode of nutrition, etc.
