Liquids generally have lower density than solids, but Ice floats on water because of the tiny holes or vacant spaces present in it.
Due to these holes the air gwts trapped in the them and thus Ice floats on water.

the mass per unit volume of a substance is called density.
though ice is a solid but it has a cage like structure in which some spaces are present between the particles of water .(those left when water solidifies).
These spaces are trapped by the air particles. Infact these spaces are larger as compared to the spaces present bet. the particles of water m Hence the density of ice is less than that of water .A substance with lower density than water can float on water. Thus ice floats on water.
