liquids can have one free surface.
Liquid contain only one free surfacebecause force of attraction is less between the atom which do not allow it have more than one free surface. ... Since gases do not exhibit superficial tension phenomena (they have no defined shape or volume) they can not form on their own a free surface.

Explanation:
liquids' matter is not very able to sprd quickly like gas's matters but it can change its composition....I mean shape...but not size...so, yeah liquids different shape....
