though ice is solid it has large amount of space between its molecules. these spaces are larger than compared to spaces in water molecules. Thus the volume of ice is greater than water and the density of ice is less than water. A substance with low density can float on water.

Answer:
Density of ice is lower than water's density. The low density can be attributed to small pores it has which allows it to trap air.Hence, ice floats on water.
