liquids generally have low density as compared to solid but we observed that ice floats on water it is because the volume of substance increases therefore its density decreases. Ice is solid , it has large number of empty space in between its particles
or
This is because of the anomalous behaviour shown by the ice

Density of ice is less than the density of water. The low density of ice can be attributed to the small pores it was which allows it to trap air.Hence ice floats on water.
