Liquids generally have lower density than solid. But in ice the spaces between the particles are more than that of liquid water. The empty spaces in ice is about 26%. Thus the density of ice decreases and it floats on water.

Density of ice is less than the density of water. The low density of ice can be attributed to the small pores it has which allows it to trap air hence ice floats on water.

Hope it Helps !!
