Liquids generally have lower density as compared to solids. But you must have observed that ice floats on water. Find out why ?

As the volume of a substance increases, its density decreases. Through ice is a solid, it has large number of empty spaces between its particles.

it is so because during winter the topmost layer of water turns in to ice due to atmospheric temp.
secondly water is at 4 degree wheareas ice is at 0 degree celcius
