because the structure of ice is such that there are vacant spaces between water molecules thus making the ice lighter than water

Liquid generally have lesser density as compared to solids but ice floats on water despite of being a solid. The reason for this is the structure of ice is made up of a cage like formation inside due to hydrogen – hydrogen bond formation.
This cage like structure of hydrogen traps a lot of air inside the actual pieces of ice. Due to the presence of this air, ice becomes lighter than its liquid form which is water and is observed to float on it.
