Liquids generally have lower density as compared to the solids but u must have observed that ice float on water. Why?

Though ice is solid but it floats on water.
This is Because is ice have LOWER DENISTY than water.

We know that :
Density = Mass / Volume
As volume increases , density decreases.
Also as volume decreases , density increases
Here in this case , volume of ice increases as it freezes to form a solid.But mass is the same in both the cases.
The volume is increased due to the creation of empty spaces , when water is freezes to form ice.
As volume of ice is more , its density is less.
As the density of water is more than ice , ice floats on the surface of water
