Land transportation basically implies physical movement of human beings and other animate and inanimate objects from one location to the other through roadways.

Water transportation refers to the movement or flow of people and objects through various waterways such as ocean, river, streams, canals etc.

Explanation:

Difference between land and water transportation:-

  1. Water transportation usually involves considerably large transportation capacity which mainly includes heavy duty industrial shipments. In contrast, the loading capacity of land transportation is relatively due to several risk factors such as adverse road conditions, chances of accidents, robbery or theft and so forth.
  2. Water transportation is most appropriate for very long distance travel or shipments but land transportation usually involves relatively short distance travel or ventures.
  3. The costs or expenses involved in constructing and maintaining water transportation is much less compared to land or road transportation as water transportation mostly includes natural mode of transportation which requires minimal construction and infrastructural improvements as opposed to land/road transport, which demands regular supervision and intense physical and infrastructural maintenance.
  4. The fuel and energy charges required for both the transportation systems are different mainly due to differences in vehicle mileage and engine capacity under both systems.
  5. The modes of transportation are different in both the systems.Water transportation mediums commonly include ships, steamers, boats, tankers etc. and land transportation mainly includes cars, trucks, bikes, jeeps and so forth.
  6. In most countries, water transportation system is sponsored and administered by the government or public sector,as opposed to land transportation which usually comes under private sector.
  7. Statistically, the number of accidents and mishaps are much less in the water transportation compared to road transportation.
  8. Water transportation modes or mediums are mostly preferable for commercial purposes or shipments which involves large scale industrial transportation needs and are often used for international commercial transportation of goods and services.Land transportation modes are used to small scale and low volume transports which involves relatively much smaller quantities and distance.
  9. Road or land transportation is mostly suitable or convenient for domestic transportation that is confined within the geographical boundaries of a particular country.Water transportation is mostly applicable for international travels, tours, cruises and commercial shipments.
  10. The time of transportation or travel also varies between the land and water transportation.Water transportation has much less physical barriers such as bad road conditions, construction delays or unpredictable road blocks or other emergency circumstances as it involves a natural road or pathway which is water. However, the travel time in road transportation varies relatively more than the water transportation due to several practical factors such as poor road conditions, traffic related delays, sudden road blocks, construction delays and so forth.
