Answer :-
The following are the characteristic features of the lungs which make them efficient respiratory surfaces :-
- Presence of Alveoli - The alveoli are sac like structures which help to increase the surface area of absorption inside the lungs.
- Thin walls of air sacs - The walls of the alveolar air sacs are very thin, so that the gases can quickly diffuse through them. Oxygen is absorbed into the blood and carbon dioxide is given out to be exhaled out.
- Moist surface of air sacs - The alveolar air sacs are moist and are layered with mucus so that gases can get dissolved before getting diffused.
- Large surface area of lungs - The surface area of absorption inside the lungs of human beings, is roughly equal to that of a tennis court.
- Adequate blood supply - The alveolar air sacs are provided with a large network of blood capillaries, so that even large volumes of gases can be exchanged with ease.
Note :-
Amount of blood supply is Directly Proportional to the rate of gaseous exchange.
