The Epidermis have 3 principal functions:
1.Protecting the body from the environment , particularly the sun.
2.Preventing excessive water loss from body.
3.Protecting the body from infections.
And when it becomes older its conection with the plants have been cutoff from the body of plant and pecone dead and rough surface.

2) it prevents plant body from the entering parasites
3) it prevents from excessive loss of water.
when the plant gets old it gets replaced by a thick layer of dead cells known as cork
