List 3 functions of alveoli which enable them to perform their functions
Answers
IMPORTANT FUNCTION ***
OXYGEN diffuses from the air in the alveoli into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air in the alveoli.
Features of the alveoli :
===========================
◇They give the lungs a really big surface area.
◇They have moist, thin walls (just one cell thick)
◇They have a lot of tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
■The alveoli are where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and breathing out. Oxygen breathed in from the air passes through the alveoli and into the blood and travels to the tissues throughout the body.
■Alveoli are an important part of the respiratory system whose function it is to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules to and from the bloodstream. These tiny, balloon-shaped air sacs sit at the very end of the respiratory tree and are arranged in clusters throughout the lungs.

Adaptations of the alveoli:
----------------------------------------------
Moist walls - gases dissolve in the moisture helping them to pass across the gas exchange surface. Permeable walls - allow gases to pass through. Extensive blood supply - ensuring oxygen rich blood is taken away from the lungs and carbon dioxide rich blood is taken to the lungs.
