The East India Company opened a port in Calcutta. By the mid 1700s the European military strength of Great Britain and France surpassed the Mughal Empire that ruled Bengal.

Bengal’s new Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah challenged the increasing power of the British. To consolidate its position the British built Fort William in Calcutta. This further infuriated Siraj-ud-daulah and he attacked the Fort and won. Soon after, Robert Clive was asked to take charge of the Company. In the Battle of Plassey, Clive cleverly ousted Siraj, defeated the French (ally of the Nawab), signed a pact with the defeated army and killed the Nawab.
