The history of the colonial period, generally, hasn’t needed to be reconstructed in the way that older historical periods have been as it was, on the whole, well documented.

Nevertheless, a number of the more traumatic scenes of colonialism, especially in the earlier periods were hidden from the official historical records. These events have been reconstructed through sources such as: diaries, written witness testaments, local histories and personal letters.

The best sources for the vast majority of the history of the colonial period come from national archives and are found in government documents, communiques, treaties, personal writings and for the later period photographs and propaganda.
