Robert Whittaker classified the living organisms into the five kingdoms based on :
(A) The mode of nutrition carried out by them
(B) The type of nucleus ( prokaryotic or eukaryotic )
(C) Unicellular or Multicellular .

Bacteria and fungi are differentiated by :
(A) Bacteria - Prokaryotic ; Fungi - Eukaryotic
(B) Bacteria - Unicellular ; Fungi - Multicellular

Plants and animals are differentiated by :

The present trend in biology is to follow the five kingdom classification proposed by R.H.Whittaker in the year 1969.

Whittaker classified the living organisms into five kingdoms namely. Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.

The main criteria for classification used by him include cell structure, thallus organization, mode of nutrition, reproduction and phylogenic relationships.

a) bacteia & fungi

1)nature of cell wall ( of chitin or peptidoglycan)

2)presence or absence of flagella

3)presence or absense of myselium.

b) plants & animals

1)presence or absense of cell wall

2) presense or absense of chloroplyll

3) mobility
