Jawaharlal Nehru salutes the flag as he becomes independent India's first prime minister on August 15, 1947 during the Independence Day ceremony at Red Fort, New Delhi, India.
Shyam Saran Negi was the first Indian to cast his vote in the country’s first-ever general elections held in October 1951. The man who turned 100 this year was a part of voter turnout of 45.7 per cent. India was also one of the first countries to give equal rights to women to vote.
India won the Cricket World Cup for the first time, 25th June, 1983. It was India's first cricket World Cup win. In the final match, they defeated West Indies who were considered the most fearsome team in the world at that time.
Pratibha Devisingh Patil became the first woman who holds the office as a president of the India. She served as a 12th president in India from 2007 to 2012 after conquering her competitor, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.
Since its independence in 1947, India has progressed considerably in terms of building ropes and connecting cities. While there might be a lot of scope for infrastructure, better education and economic policies, the country has made significant inroads into becoming a globally re cognised power.
