The five fundamental duties are:

1. abide by the Constitution and to respect its deals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem;
2. cherish and follow the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom;
3. uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India;
4. promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India;
5. protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife, and have compassion for living creatures.

Fundamental duties are important because by performing them we are building our nation. We are making our communities live in harmony with each other. In a land of great diversity, we can all live in unity with a spirit of tolerance and oneness. In a Democracy, the observance of our Fundamental Duties reflects how much we value our system of government, our nation, and our fellow citizens.
