The following are the characteristics of management.

1. Management is a goal-oriented process

An organization comes into existence for a particular reason/goal. The efforts of the employees are required for the organization to achieve these goals, through the process of management.

2. Management is pervasive

Management is common everywhere, be it in an organization or even in your own home. It is an important process to help progress forward.

3. Management is multi-dimensional

There are three main activities that are focussed on within the management process.

  • Management of work: management translates the organization's work into goals that need to be achieved.
  • Management of people: management involves dealing with individual needs, opinions, capabilities, and interests of groups.
  • Management of operations: management is involved in the production process, from input to output.

4. Management is a group activity

Every individual in the firm has some role to perform in order to achieve the goals set earlier. This requires teamwork and harmony between employees.

5. Management is a dynamic process

The atmosphere where management takes place will always be changing. No one can tell what will happen in the future and hence there could always be a possibility of a change in plans/goals.

6. Management is an intangible force

Management isn't something that can be touched, but it can definitely be noticed and felt in the way the organization looks/is controlled.
