There are many factors which can cause a shortage or depletion of resources. Some of them are:

1. Depletion of resources can occur due to unnecessary or excessive use of the resources.

2. The non-equitable distribution of resources - Some areas or people may possess the resources and others may not be able to access it. The resources may be over-used in those areas.

3. Erosion of the soil - This can happen due to floods or other natural causes. The soil can lose its nutrients due to improper agricultural use.

4. Mining for oil and minerals - Excessive mining operations can result in the lack of resources for the future.

5. Deforestation - Indiscriminate cutting of trees and forests in order to clear the area for residential purposes can lead to a shortage of wood and other forest resources.

6. Growth of population - This can put an extra pressure on the limited resources and thereby lead to its depletion.
