The Salient features of the Indian Constitution

Explanation:

The important features of our constitution are:

a. Separation of Powers- We may give example of this feature, whereby Constitution clearly defines the powers of the three organs of the government that is the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. This prevents concentration of power and is in the democratic spirit, as the jurisdiction of three organs is defined. Further, in order to prevent any misuse of power the Constitution also provides for a system of check and balances.

b. Fundamental Rights- These are basic rights without which no individual can develop himself to the fullest. This rather forms the core of any democratic society as these rights ensure participation of the people in the governance of the country and also guarantees liberty, equality of opportunities, justice and fairness to them. These rights also protect citizens from the arbitrary exercise of power. These rights serve as the limitations on the powers of the government which it cannot intrude.

c. Federalism: India has a federal system ,  Our  federal form of government provides for distribution of powers between the Central and State Governments with clear distribution of power between the centre and the states. We have an independent Judiciary that  guards the very spirit of this division of powers by ensuring that both the central and state governments works within their respective jurisdiction.

e. Secularism: It is an essential features of our constitution and forms the bedrock of our democracy. It implies that state does not establish any religion as a state religion. The state does not favor any particular religion, nor it promotes any particular religion . It  also guarantees right to freedom of religion to all. Everybody is allowed freely profess, propagate preach religion of his/her choice. It is based on the idea of "Equal respect for all religions".
