Water pollution is caused due to several human activities. The five major water pollutants with their sources are as follows:

1. Radioactive substances:  Due to the mining, like uranium      contained minerals water gets polluted.

2. Pesticides: To kill the fungi, insects and weeds in the farm chemicals are used. These get mixed with the water and pollutes.

3. Heat:  In industries, water is used for cooling the reactors.

4. Organic waste: Animal excreta, domestic sewage, discharge from food factories etc pollutes the water during the run off.

5. Chemical pollutants:  The chemicals like cadmium, nickel, magnesium are water soluble but can damage the kidneys, liver and central nervous system.
