There around five World heritage Sites recognised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation ( UNESCO)

It’s a matter of pride for Maharashtra that the two out of the first four recognised UNESCO world heritage sites are located in the state. The sites being The Ellora and the Ajanta Caves, recognised in 1983 along with the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal.

The other two recognised sites are Elephanta Caves on the Gharapuri Island near Mumbai (1987) and the Chhatrapathi Shivaji Terminus (formerly known as the Victoria Terminus) in Mumbai (2004)

Maharashtra also share it’s fifth World heritage site with the states of Karnataka and Kerala, i.e. the Western Ghats (2012)

Ellora Caves

These caves are quite special for me , as they are located around 28 km away from my home town Aurangabad in the state of Maharashtra. There are in all 34 Cave complexes, seventeen Hindu, twelve Buddhist, and five Jain.

Cave 16, also known as the Kailash Temple, is considered one of the most remarkable cave temples in India because of its size, architecture and sculptural treatment. It is dedicated to Shiva, and also contains smaller, detached shrines dedicated to Ganga , Yamuna and Saraswati. The structure looks like a freestanding, multi-storeyed temple complex, but it was carved out of one single rock, and covers an area double the size of Parthenon in Athens!

2) Ajintha/Ajanta Caves

Located at a distance of 104 km from Aurangabad, the caves include paintings and sculptures described by the government Archeological Survey of India, as "the finest surviving examples of Indian art, particularly painting", which are masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, with figures of the Buddha and depictions of the Jataka tales.
