Seventeen public sector refineries are located at Guwahati, Barauni, Koyali, Haldia, Mathura, Digboi, Panipat, Chennai, Narimanam, Bongaigaon, Mumbai (HPCL), Vishakhapatnam, Mumbai (BPCL), Kochi, Numaligarh, Tatipaka (ONGC) and Bina (M.P.) Bina refinery was inaugurated in June 2003.

Assam Here petroleum is found in large quantities.The first petroleum dug well was discovered here.About 63% of the India total petroleum production is from this state.

Rajasthan and Gujarat have many petroleum and oil ores and they are accountable for 18% production.

Mumbai High Gulf of Cambay and other refineries in Bassein account for the remaining 16% production.

The last 3% is obtained from other scattered wells present in South India
