Although there are quite a number of female social activists in Maharashtra, I am giving a list of a few very popular ones. They are:-
1. Dr. Rani Bang - She, along with Dr. Abhay Bang, are social activists and researchers who have been working on a programme for the betterment of community health in Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra. Their programme has reduced the rates of infant mortality rates in the most poverty-stricken areas. The WHO and the UNICEF have also endorsed their approach and have globalized their programme.
2. Savitribai Phule - In 1848, she founded the first school for women at Bhide Wada, Pune.
3. Nirmala Deshpande – In 1952, she joined the Bhoodan movement under Vinoba Bhave, and she undertook a padayatra of a 40,000-km journey across India to spread the message of Grām Swarāj. In 2009, she also bestowed with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, which is Pakistan's 3rd highest civilian honors.
4. Medha Patkar - A Popular activist who was known for her active role in the Narmada Bachao Andolan.
5. Sindhutai Sapkal – She had founded many orphanages for the street children.
