Under the British Raj, the Indian subcontinent was ruled by British governor generals. The list of governor generals in India and their achievements are as following:
i. Lord Hastings(1812-23): He added to the territories under the British control
ii. Lord Bentinck(1828-35): He imposed social reforms, and some with the intent of bringing to India the progress in Europe following the Industrial Revolution.
iii. Lord Dalhousie(1848-56): He reduced Titles and Pensions of the Mughal emperor and Maratha Peshwa. He also proposed the system of Doctrine of Lapse.
iv. Lord Mountbatten(12.2.1947-15.8.1947): He was appointed as the the last Viceroy of India for the supervision of Partition.
