The number of people hanged in India after independence remains a debatable subject. According to "NLU Delhi", 755 people have been hanged till death after independence. However, as per "People's Union for Civil Liberties", number is much greater than that, approximately double than what is mentioned by "NLU Delhi". Other sources also mention the fact that more than 700 people have been given capital punishment till date. Some highly publicised hangings were those of Afzal Guru, Ajmal Kasab and Dhanajoy Chatterjee.
