Tense is a grammatical topic that deals with time.
There are 3 main types of tenses.
- Present Tense
- Past Tense
- Future Tense
Present Tense refers to an action that is going on/a habitual action.
Example: She sings.
He is dancing.
Present Tense is further divided into 4 types:
1. Simple Present/Present Tense: Habitual Actions
- He raps.
- She dances.
2. Present Continuous Tense: An action that is going on.
- She is singing a song.
- They are watching a movie.
3. Present Perfect Tense: An event in the past having effects in the present.
- She has lived here all her life.
- He has forgotten to do his homework.
4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense: An event that started at the past and is continuing in the present.
- It has been 4 hours since you started playing.
- She has been reading books since last week.
Past Tense is also further divided into 4 types.
1. Simple Past/Past Tense: An event that is over/happened in the past.
- He danced.
- She watered the flowers.
2. Past Continuous Tense: An action that began in the past and is still continuing (whilst speaking).
- He was waiting for you.
- She was was eating her food.
3. Past Perfect Tense: An action a long time ago.
- I had lost my pen.
- You had not helped him when he needed it.
4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense: An action that started and continued in the past.
- They had been watching the movie for 3 hours.
- I had been searching for her since Tuesday.
The same follows for Future Tense.
1. Simple Future/Future Tense: An action in the future.
- It will rain.
- She will go shopping.
2. Future Continuous Tense: An ongoing action that will happen.
- She will be studying for her exams.
- He will be writing a letter.
3. Future Perfect Tense: An action that will be completed in the future.
- He will have finished his exams by Thursday.
- They will have enjoyed the picnic.
4. Future Perfect Continuous: An ongoing action that will be completed in the future.
- They will have been married for 6 years.
- She will have been studying for 2 hours.
