The Assam Primary Education Act was enacted in the year 1926. It was the first compulsory primary education Act for Assam. The objective of the act was to reorganize and ensure compulsory primary education in Assam. Assam Primary Education Act, 1926 made compulsory primary education a responsibility of local bodies and municipalities.

The Assam Primary Education Act, 1926 was applicable for young boys and girls living in both rural and urban areas. As per the Act, the provincial authority was to provide 2/3rd of the fund required for ensuring compulsory primary education. The Assam Primary Education Act, 1926 marked a new beginning in the educational sector of Assam. But it failed to uplift state of primary education in the North East Indian state. The Assam Primary Education Act, 1926 was later replaced by the Assam Primary Education Act, 1947.
