Cork cells are formed from parenchyma tissues of the cortex region in the stem when they suddenly turn meristematic.
Cork cells are many-layered and contain suberin on their cell wall. This makes the cork tissue impervious to air and water. Thus, they act as protective tissue.
The function of cork cells is to produce the cork, a tough protective material.
