Experiment to determine that focal length of a convex lens depends upon the surrounding medium

Step-by-step Explanation:

Apparatus required

  • Convex lens whose focal length is known
  • holder for lens
  • Glass container
  • Stone
  • Water

Procedure

  • Take a cylinder of height greater than lens and fill it with water
  • Put a stone at the bottom of cylinder
  • Now adjust the stone in cylinder with the help of holder ins such a way that its height is less than or equal to the focal length if lens
  • Now see the stone through lens
  • Now increase the height of lens till the image of stone is lost
  • From this we conclude that , when the lens was adjusted in water at a focal length which was greater than its focal length in air, we were able to see the object. Which means focal length of lens has increased in water
  • Thus, we can conclude that focal length of lens in medium dependent
