During the Sangam Age, Tamil regions were ruled by 3 dynasties: the Chera, Chola and Pandyas. Together with the Cholas of Uraiyur and the Pandyas of Madurai, the early Cheras were known as one of the three major powers (muventar) of ancient Tamilakam (a macro region in south India) in the early centuries of the Common Era
Explanation:
Chera Dynasty
- The Chera Dynasty has ruled two separate eras. The Sangam period was marked by the 1st Chera Dynasty, while the 2nd Chera Dynasty was ruled by the 9th century AD. We learn about the 1st Chera Dynasty through Sangam Text. The regions ruled by Cheras were Cochin, South Malabar and North Travancore.
- Their "capitals" were "Vanchi Muthur", "Kizhanthur-Kandallur,"and Karur Vanchi. Kulashekhara Alwar was the second Chera dynasty. His capital, Mahodayapuram. The last Kera king of the second 2006 ) state was Rama Varma Kulashekhra. From 1090 until 1102, he governed. After him, Chera Dynasty finished.
- Early historical Chera territories (pre-Pallava) includes the central Kerala and western Nadu today. The territories comprised areas like Kuttanad (north), Pazhinad, Kudanad, Coimbatore, Palghat, Kollimalai and Salem between Kanya Kumari (south) & Kasargod (north).
Chola Dynasty
- One of the "longest reigning" dynasties in the globe was the Chola Dynasty. Until the 13th century CE, they proceeded to reign over numerous territories. Cholas' base was the prosperous Valley of the Kaveri, but they governed a much wider territory from the latter half of the 9th to the early 13th centuries. The whole nation was unified south of the Tungabhadra & retained for 3 centuries as a single kingdom.
- Chola's lands were expanded between 1010 and 1153 from the Maldives (south) to Godvari River Bank (far north). Southern peninsular India, now part of Sri Lanka, was invaded by Rajaraja Chola, and the Maldives were annecated. Mahipala, the Pataliputra king of Pala has also been defeated. Malaysia and Indonesia have succeeded in attacking Srivijaya cities. The Chola Empire weakened as the Pandyan Empire rose and gradually collapsed at the beginning of the 13th century. The Chola Empire comprised the present day territories of Tiruvarur, Tiruchirapalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Pichvaram Thanjavur, & Vridhachalam districts, Tamil Nadu.
Pandya Dynasty
- The Pandyas had ruled substantial territories at the time of the Pandya dynasty, some of which included significant portions of South India & Sri Lanka. Madurai was the Pandya Kingdom 's capital. Early leaders of Pandya (Pandya Nadu), that included the inner Madurai city and the Southern Port of Korkai, had controlled their country since ancient times.
- The Pandya ruled vast territories comprising Tanjavur, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, Kanchipuram Madurai, Vengi, among others
