Microorganisms have many uses in our daily lives and industries.

  • Baking: Before making bread, a species of streptococcus is added to the dough for the required fermentation.
  • Production of dairy products: Bacteria help in fermentation which helps in making different forms of dairy products from milk like Lactobacillus in curd, buttermilk, butter, and cheese. Streptococcus is the main genus of bacteria that is used in the production of milk products on a commercial level.
  • Organic acids: Organic acids are prepared by using fungi. Acetobacter, Rhizopus, and Penicillium are a few fungi that are used in the fermentation of substrates like fruits. Examples of acids derived using fungi are acetic acid, citric acid, and lactic acid.
  • Drinks: Alcoholic drinks are also prepared by fermentation. Alcohol is prepared by fermenting fruits like grapes or potatoes and then distillation is done. The microorganism used here is yeast. Alcoholic drinks made with this process include wine, rum, vodka, etc.

∴ Microorganisms are crucially important for commercial and

in-house daily purposes.

Microorganisms are used in a variety of sectors and in our daily lives, including-

1. Curd is made from milk using Lactobacillus

2. Rhizobium, which lives in the roots of pulse plants, fixes nitrogen from the air and provides nitrogen compounds to the pulse plants.

 3. Yeasts are a common microbe utilized in the manufacturing of beverages such as beer, brandy, rum, wine, and whiskey.

4. Pollution is reduced using microbes. Decomposers like bacteria and fungus, for example, break down dead bodies and excreta into inorganic substances that plants may absorb.

5. Microbes are also vital in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. Antibiotics are bacteria-killing compounds produced by microorganisms. Penicillin is a Penicillin-based antibiotic.

6. Bacteria in our intestine aid in digestion and the absorption of vitamin B via the intestine.

7. Certain bacteria are also utilised in sewage and industrial effluent biological treatment

8. Idli, bhaturas, bread, pastries, and cakes are all made with yeast.

Hence, Microbes play a significant role in industries and our daily lives, resulting in a wide range of products.
