Though railways is the biggest public sector undertaking and provides easy and safe travelling to people but it faces many problems.
The following are the problems faces by railways :
i) Most of the rail tracks in India are broad-gauge. But in some places there are used metre-gauge and narrow-gauge. This causes inconvenience of change of train at frequent stations to reach a destination.
ii) Frequented delays are the most common problem faced by railways. This delay is caused by unwanted chain pulling, signal delays,etc.
iii) Most of the trains in Indian railways are passenger and express trains. They are quite slow from the modern-age. This makes people to go for other mode of transport like roadways,airways,etc.
iv) Illegal practices in rail travel is practiced. Cases of thefts,robbery,etc. are reported which makes railways unsafe for people.
v) 60% of trains in Indian railways are diesel which makes fast consumption of fossil fuel along with that there is caused high rate of pollution. Also railways cannot be laid down everywhere. Due to this railways cannot cover some areas like hilly terrains, high altitude regions,etc.
