Their molecules are much more tightly packed together than they are in gases. Therefore they have much higher densities, often fairly similar to one another. The difference between them is that solids are usually crystalline in form. They stay more or less in place, bonded to nearby molecules, but vibrate around their equilibrium positions. Liquid molecules are more mobile, forming only temporary bonds with neighboring molecules that are more easily broken, allowing them to wander around in their environments.
