Modern Era

It is the Development Period when all the Forces of Modernity like Science, Democracy, Liberty, Equality were brought about in the World for the betterment of Humanity.

On the Contrary, Medieval Period is the era which lacked all these features.

  • Britishers called their 'Period of Colonialism' in India as 'Modern Era' because -
  1. They introduced Railways, Post Office, Newspapers etc... that were important means of Transport and Communication.
  2. Britishers also introduced English Education in India. By this, we could read and understand what was happening in the World around.
  3. They revolutionized Agriculture by building canals and introducing Irrigation.... rather than depending on Annual Rainfall.
  4. They introduced Medicines to treat Diseases.
  5. Today's Administrative System, Constitution and Parliament are a replica of British Administration.

  • But Indian Historians do not refer this period as 'Modern Era' because -
  1. Indians were not treated at par with the whites.
  2. Indians had No Equality, Freedom or Liberty under British Administration.
  3. India did not Prosper or Grow Economically during this period. Infact, Industries in Britain flourished due to raw materials exported from India. Britain grew economically by this Colonialism, India became Poor.
  4. Indians were not appointed in High Positions in Administration.
  5. Drought was induced in many parts of India and several Indians died because Britishers did not allow Farmers to grow Food grains and ordered them to grow Indigo for Textile Industries in Britain.
