In India, the Air Prevention and Control of Pollution Act which came into force in 1981 was amended in 1987 to include noise as an air pollutant. Noise is the elevated level of sound that cannot be tolerated and is undesired. Noise can cause various problems like irritation, sleeplessness, altered breathing patterns, stress and sometimes, extremely loud noises can even damage our eardrums.

List of the common sources of noise pollution in our surroundings are:

1. Loudspeakers

2. Firecrackers

3. Vehicles

4. Traffic noise

5. Drilling and mining sounds

6. Industrial noise

7. Conflicts in our neighbourhood
